About us
The idea of a European Dental Hygienists' Federation was born in 1998 at the IFDH Congress in Florence. The EDHF was then founded on May 5, 2001 in Utrecht as a non-profit federation. The
statutes were signed by the founding member countries: Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands,
Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. Slovakia und the Czech Republick have successively joined.
The establishment of this European Federation is a historical milestone fundamental to the
advancement of the dental hygiene profession in Europe. Several reasons for creating the EDHF
were to form a pioneer structure that unites the members of the individual countries and to protect and
defend their interests and legitimate rights. Furthermore, the EDHF intends to standardize the
rights, duties, qualifications and fundamental role, of dental hygienists in Europe.
These are some of the EDHF objectives:
- Protect, respect and promote the practice of dental hygiene in all European countries.
- Encourage interest in the dental hygiene profession in all European countries.
- Establish and maintain relationships with other associations in all matters concerning dental health.
- Represent, manage, defend and promote the professional, educational and financial interests of the member countries.
- Encourage solidarity among European dental hygienists.
- Standardize academic education for dental hygienists in all European countries.
